A report published
Tuesday by the World Economic Forum (WEF) at www.weforum.org estimates that Nigeria’s
population would hit 473.123 million by 2060, based on the nation’s high
fertility rate and huge youth population that would guaranty rapid expansion.
Consequently,
Nigeria, who population rising to 182 million last year, is expected to push
the United States with an estimated 403.503 million people to number four,
India push China which has remained in the top spot since the 1950s, to the
second position by 2022.
The report titled:
“By 2060, this country will have the world's largest population,” recalled that
in the 1950s, according to data from the United Nations, global population was
around 2.5 billion and has today grown to almost 7.5 billion. It is expected to
rise to 9.7 billion by 2050.
In the middle of
the 20th Century, China was home to 500 million people and has since remained
the world’s most populous nation, followed by India and the United States.
In 2020, India is
predicted to have over 1,383,000 million citizens, compared to China’s
1,402,000 million. But eight years later in 2028, India is set to gain over 100
million people, while China’s population is only projected to increase by 1.4
million.
The report also
noted the case of the Democratic Republic of Congo another African nation, with
a population of around 12 million in 1950, expected to reach 237.216 million by
2060, ahead of Brazil’s 236.013 million.
“Brazil,
consistently one of the world's most populous countries, will see its ageing
population increase while overall numbers decline.
“European countries
including the UK, Germany and Italy were among the world’s most populous
nations in the 1950s. Today, they no longer make the top 12,” just as Russia,
the fourth most populous country in 1950, would disappear from the list by
2040.”
Going by the
various permutations, the world’s 12 most populous nations by 2060 could be:
India; China; Nigeria; U.S; Pakistan; Indonesia; Democratic Republic of Congo;
Brazil; Ethiopia; Bangladesh; Tanzania; and Mexico.
