Another academic record was set at the ongoing 49th
convocation event of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday, as the Department
of History recorded its first ever First Class Honours graduate.
He is Emmanuel Osayande. Before admission to study history
at the University, Osayande attended Home Science Schools, Ikoyi for his
primary school education and later Christ The King International School
Gbagada, Lagos, for his secondary education.
In an interview with Independent, Osanyande disclosed that
his passion to know about people around him had helped a lot in his academic
pursuit at the University.
Apart from the study of history, Osanyande has also obtained
certification in various Information Technology programmes as well as
proficiency certificate in the study of the French language, saying that he planned
to further his academic study after the service year.
It will be recalled that one year after having its first
5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average, recorded by Ayodele Dada of Psychology
Department, two female students of the University, Miss Taiwo Bankole and Miss
Ajoke Omotuyi, have again graduated with 5.00 CGPA from the institution in the
2015/2016 academic session.
At the first day of the convocation for the 2015/2016
academic session presided over by Prof. Rahaman Bello, the institution’s Vice
chancellor, a total of 3,578 graduates were admitted into their various
diplomas, certificates, and degrees in the Faculties of Arts, Sciences, and
Social Sciences respectively.
According to the VC: “Out of the graduating students on the
first day of the event, 99 finished in the First Class honours, 862 with Second
Class Upper Division, 1,659 with Second Class Division, 799 with Third Class ,
69 with pass degrees, while 91 graduated with diplomas.
Prof. Bello commended President Mohammed Buhari for
curtailing the activities of the deadly Boko Haram sect during the spate of
bombing across the north east region of the country.
He said: “We like to commend Mr. President for the efforts
put in to fight the two cankerworms facing the nation, insecurity and
corruption. The successes achieved by the military in flushing out the Boko
Haram insurgents from Sambisa forest are highly commendable”.
Prof Bello, who will be completing his tenure as the 11th
vice chancellor of the university in November this year, urged the president to
continue his drive to change the negative mindsets of the world about Nigeria
and her citizens.
He advised all Nigerians ‘to latch on to the change mantra
to free the nation from the burden it currently carries as a result of not
paying full attention to infrastructure needs while developing high tastes for
foreign goods’.
