President Muhammadu Buhari has explained that his desire to maintain the tempo of the current war against corruption was the reason why he resubmitted Mr. Ibrahim Magu’s name as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Buhari in a new letter addressed to the Senate and read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday said confirmation of Magu’s nomination becomes imperative in order to “maintain current momentum” in the fight against corruption.
Also, in another separate letter to the Senate, Buhari picked holes in the Senate Adhoc Committee’s report, which accused the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, of alleged contract scam in the Presidential Initiative on North-East (PINE).
The President said Lawal was not given fair hearing by the Senate and that the report of the adhoc committee was not signed by majority of its members, hence he cannot take any action on the allegations against the SGF.
Before reading the two letters from the President by the Senate President Bukola Saraki today, the Senate had earlier gone into a closed-door session, which lasted for about one and the half hours.
