NCC Issues One-Week Ultimatum To Telecom Companies Over Unsolicited SMS

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued one-week ultimatum to telecommunications services providers in the country to stop sending unsolicited telemarketing messages to subscribers or risk severe sanctions.

“After several meetings, including those held with the network providers, it became necessary to issue the latest ultimatum to redress the menace of incessant unsolicited text messages and phone calls for telemarketing via the various networks,” NCC Director, Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, said.

NCC had in April this year issued a Do Not Disturb (DND) directive to MTN, Airtel, Globacom and other telecommunications providers but noted the directive had been observed in the breach by the  service providers.

It therefore warns that the flouting of regulations would not go unpunished.
