The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has indicated its intention to tinker with its earlier decision of 180 as the 2016 National cut-off mark for candidates seeking admission into the Nation’s institutions of higher learning.
The Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede disclosed this at the 2nd Technical Committee meeting of the board held at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE) Owerri.
This, he said, was in response to concerns expressed by some institutions on their inability to effect this cut off mark following their inability to fill a reasonable percentage of their quota if the rule is strictly applied.
“A large number of institutions, particularly the budding ones have applied for a waiver to enable them admit candidates who in some instances scored, below 180 marks” he stated.
As a board, Professor Oloyede said “we have studied the trend of admissions and have come up with a finding that hardly do the institutions collectively fill their quota annually”.
The JAMB Registrar who explained the essence of service delivery said that JAMB had begun the process of reviewing the process of some of her service delivery platforms to the public which according to him is aimed at enhancing her service to the public in line with international best practice, that would eliminate some of the difficulties her clients pass through in accessing her services.
Governor Rochas Okorocha who declared the meeting open through his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere disclosed that over 1.5million students of the state origin had applied for admission into tertiary institutions for the 2016/ 2017 academic session.
While appreciating the task, confronting the technical committee in respect of the number of applicants seeking admission spaces that are rather limited in number, the governor urged JAMB to review upwards the admission quota for the Imo State University (IMSU) and the AIFCE respectively for candidates of Medicine and Degree programmes.
The governor noted that the AIFCE has adequate facilities and manpower to justify carrying capacity of over 4000 candidates for the degree programme, explaining that the request for upward review of the admission quota for candidates of medicine and surgery was to justify the on going upgrade of facilities and manpower in the college.
“You are aware that Imo State has education as the major pivot of the rescue mission agenda and the mass investment in education can only transform into greater fortune for our people if the opportunities for tertiary education is expanded.”
Provost of the College Dr. Mrs. Blessing Ijioma had in an address earlier traced the history of the institution, stating that the state had in the last 10 years produced the highest number of candidates in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as well as the highest number in school certificate examinations in the country.
Ijioma disclosed that the college had of recent begun new programmes in technical education, adult and nonformal education, vocational education and special education.
The courses, she said became necessary to empower the students to teach the next generation since the nation is now moving away from white-collar jobs to technical and entrepreneurial careers.
